Unlike some other reproductions of classic texts (1) We have not used OCR(Optical Character Recognition), as this leads to bad quality books with introduced typos. (2) In books where there are images such as portraits, maps, sketches etc We have endeavoured to keep the quality of these images, so they represent accurately the original artefact. Though the subtitle of this book uses the word "tale," the term belies the epic nature of the intricately woven plot and beautifully descriptive language of classical Mediterranean culture, as it confronted the beliefs of the strange new sect of believers, later called Christians. The original family of three, two brothers (Hector, a wrestler of some renown in the Roman world, and Herklas) and their pampered sister Salome, splits up when Herklas goes missing, and Hector and Salome leave the confines of their cozy city home to look for clues to his whereabouts. A group of young rich rioters comes upon brother and sister, and Hector uses his wrestling skills to disperse them, but goes home to find that his sister had not made it there. She eventually finds herself being nursed back to health by a Jewish convert to the new sect, and the paths of the three (Hector, Herklas, who turns out to have joined the new sect, and Salome) eventually cross with many of the characters described in Acts 13-18, including the apostle Paul. The characters and personal dilemmas of each family and group are so sympathetically and richly described, that what could easily be a sentimental caricature becomes a suspenseful epic that also teaches much about the classical Roman world and its values, and how they collided with, and yet desperately needed, the heart-melting message of the good news of Jesus and a kingdom more glorious and eternal than that of Rome. There are heart-wrenching scenes of Christians in the arena, and a scene more climactic than that in the Gladiator when Hector, the great wrestler finds himself there. The print of this book is old and small, and hard to read, but well worth the effort. This is a book that the entire family can and should enjoy. I read it to my 5 and 7 year old sons and they loved it and still remember it when we read from the book of Acts.Product details
